Arsenal: Whatever Danny Welbeck is, we need more of it
By Josh Sippie
Arsenal were treated to another wondrous display by Danny Welbeck, and he’s become a must-start. In fact, whatever he is, can we get more of it?
It’s been said before, but I’ll say it again – there are few things better than peak Danny Welbeck. I say ‘things’ because I’m often not sure if Danny Welbeck is even human. The Arsenal man is a living tornado on the pitch, and when it’s really clicking, there is nothing you can do to stop it.
The blend of power and precision, torque and muscle makes this sound more like a Chevy truck commercial than the praise of a professional footballer.
Against Atletico Madrid, there was room for improvement, of course. There is always room for improvement. But overall, his contributions were that of a striker and a winger, and everything good that comes from either position.

Welbeck took two noble attempts on goal, one was a bit of a squibbed effort, but at least he got them both on target, which is certainly an accomplishment.

He created three chances, adding to the 25 that the team created as a whole and, as Welbeck is often known to do, he was everywhere on the pitch, dominating the spotlight and holding his own, creating for himself and his team mates, doing all manner of things that star players often do.
Which again raises the question of if this is the real Danny Welbeck, and if he hasn’t just been held back by injuries all along. Because if this is the real Welbeck, then he needs to be starting at every possible opportunity because he is rising to the ranks of Arsenal players that can make things happen all on his own.
We saw it against CSKA Moscow first off, when his slick spin move gave way to the goal that saved the day. And while that saving grace was not to come against Atletico Madrid, few players displayed the ability to threaten to invoke that saving grace quite like Welbeck.
He completed a massive five dribbles, without being dispossessed a single time. He delivered workable balls from wide angles, while also showing his affinity for cutting inside with his powerful first step.

It was a mammoth performance for Welbeck, and as this season comes to a close, if he can continue to do what he has been doing as of late, then you have to go into next season at least somewhat geared towards building around this man, because he is growing into something quite special.
