Arsenal Vs Manchester United: 5 things we learned – Hope in despair
1. Ainsley Maitland-Niles could be the future
Of all the impressive performances from this young Arsenal side, none were as promising, bright, and future-inspiring as Ainsley Maitland-Niles’. Playing in the heat of the midfield, Maitland-Niles was afforded a greater freedom than he usually enjoys, with Xhaka playing the deep-lying role. He flourished in it.
He was busy as ever, showing great athleticism to cover the ground, make challenges, and clog up passing lanes. But it was his composure on the ball, his vision in his distribution, and his drive from midfield that was so noticeable. He was not overawed by the challenge, as he has been when thrust into the midfield in the past, and he showcased the very best of his talent.
There is, however, one clear problem. He does not have a position. His versatility is a testament to his intelligence. He understands the game innately and sees the field beautifully, especially for a player of his age. But because he can play in a number of positions, he plays in a number of positions, never actually specialising in any of them.
