Arsenal haven’t felt insecure in years thanks to the security of Arsene Wenger, but as Alexandre Lacazette is highlighting, that transformation is underway.

There has been such a security blanket among the Arsenal players in recent years, at that blanket goes by a clear name – Arsene Wenger. Job security was at an all time high and players really didn’t have to worry about their long-term status at the club, so long as they established a connection to Wenger.

Players like Theo Walcott were hung on to far longer than necessary, almost entirely because of the personal relationship he, and others, had with the boss. Wenger believed in his men, almost to a fault, and that kept them in a state of mediocrity at times, unable to be motivated.

There have been so many calls to ‘shake things up’ with the goal being that these players needed to be made to feel uncomfortable to play at their best, but that’s hard to do with a such a warm, welcoming presence at the top.

Things are changing now though. Selling Walcott and Olivier Giroud was the start of the ‘this is not good enough’ phase, although I still question if Giroud should have been sold.

Even then, the club didn’t showcase any major changes, even with the clear departure from emotion overruling practicality.

Now, though, it’s unavoidable. With Arsene Wenger on the way out and a new manager coming in for next season, no one is safe, and that needs to register within these Arsenal players, because it really could mean that, for the first time, some guys have to consider their immediate future beyond the safety net of this club.

And Alexandre Lacaette has been the first to highlight these newfound insecurities, and the importance of the rest of the season.

"“We want to keep going and be good because we know that a new manager is coming. Maybe everything will change. We don’t know if everyone can stay in the club.”"

Those were his words, via SkySports, and as fans, we have to be quite happy that one of our big time signings is already picking up on the implications here. It only stands to reason that everyone else has figured it out as well, and as such, the effectiveness of the squad should look sharper than they have this year. It would make sense and it would highlight the desired effect.

Job security is cool, and there are certainly people who deserve it. But the clear lack of urgency has been a pervading flaw in recent years, and it will be nice to see that exterminated completely.
