Arsenal are bound to have a lot of moving parts in the coming future, few of which are any great concern, but Aaron Ramsey’s concern has to be growing.

Few Arsenal players have stepped out from an inconsistent, often mediocre crowd this year quite like Aaron Ramsey. The Welshman has been desperate to prove to a needy fanbase that his 2023/14 breakout year was not a fluke, and while injuries are the main reason he has not been able to return to that form, the fact still remains that he has not been able to return to that form.

Until this year. This year, he has been everything that his 2013/14 self was and, arguably, even more, as he has been a catalyst for successes. His goal contribution rate is right there next to his breakout year’s and it goes without saying that this is a player that needs to be locked down.

There just aren’t many midfielders, or players in general, that have the attacking instincts and the undying engine that this man has.

Which is the biggest problem, because Ramsey’s contract runs up at the end of next season. This was already a problem, because everyone knows how good Ramsey is. Even those that denied it for years are starting to come around.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

He is going to be sought after by major powers in Europe – major powers who can offer him Champions League football.

Make no mistake about it, Ramsey is a Champions League player. What Arsenal would be asking him to do is sit through two straight years of no Champions League in exchange for the chance of a return to the competition the year after his current contract is set to expire.

All of this while he is in the prime of his career. That is a huge ask, and one that cannot be held against him if the answer does not suit our fancy.

Because it’s either patience and biding time in the Europa League, or he can go somewhere like Juventus or Barcelona and allow his strengths to thrive like never before. On the surface, it is no contest.

All we can hope for is an emotional attachment to Arsenal, even without Arsene Wenger, that ties Ramsey to this team. Perhaps some desire for more from his time here, despite how many times he has already been the hero.

Ramsey is a special player, and he deserves a contract and a team that recognizes that. Whoever the next manager is will be an instant success if he can get Ramsey to commit to the club.
