Arsenal: There is good news hidden in Jack Wilshere contract stand-off
By Josh Sippie
Arsenal and Jack Wilshere are struggling to come to terms over a new contract, but buried underneath the uncertainty is a batch of assurance.
Arsenal have been running into far too many contract situations lately and it’s pretty damn frustration. The latest one, regarding Jack Wilshere, hasn’t been any easier than the previous and, if nothing is ironed out, we will be doing this same dance with Aaron Ramsey and Danny Welbeck next year.
You may have noticed that the whole situation surrounding Jack Wilshere may indeed be stressful, but I, for one, am not nearly as stressed as I was for the corresponding situations with Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil.
While I was convinced (still am) that the Gunners could make due without either one of them, losing both was a daunting prospect. They were such a crucial piece of the starting XI set-up and any sort of major shift like that is going to cause some discomfort.

It didn’t at all. The stress we all experienced, now looking back, was overblown. The transfers we made in return were superb, and there was nothing to worry about after all.
That’s what is making this Jack Wilshere situation far less excruciating than it could otherwise be.

Obviously we all want Jack Wilshere to stay from an emotional standpoint. Plus there is plenty of belief that he can still grow into something pretty special. But beneath that, if you dig deep enough, you should find a certain assurance that, even if Wilshere should leave, the backlash would not be all that powerful.
By that I simply mean that this club largely moved on from Wilshere over a year ago. His permanent RSVP in the starting XI was finally set aside and anything we got out of him was a bonus.
As we have seen from these past few months of consistent play, while he can provide a certain upturn of fortune from time to time, for the most part, he is a fairly unspectacular presence. That is the kind of presence that can be replaced pretty easily and while it would be far more convenient to just keep Wilshere, if it’s between that and potentially getting someone better, than why not err on the side of improvement?

Remember – the emotion that governed this club has expired with Arsene Wenger. There is a new sheriff in town and they aren’t going to have the same connection to these players as Wenger did. That may sound like a bad thing, but it is far more likely to turn out brilliantly, given how strong this team is on paper.
