Arsenal look to be getting closer and closer to young Turkish defender Caglar Soyuncu, which is exciting, but if rumors are correct, it means other things too.

Arsenal’s defense needs more help than any one person can provide. And by that, I don’t mean they need to buy a handful of new defenders. Instead, I am of the opinion that one big signing on defense can rejuvenate a broken and weary rank of defenders.

Caglar Soyuncu can be that big signing, and he is inching closer to being an early summer pick-up with the recent statements from his agent. I know that it isn’t a popular take. A 21-year-old from the German second-tier is hardly a big name, but look at how well Konstantinos Mavropanos did in his brief appearances. He did so well that fans were calling on him to start next season in the starting XI.

Soyuncu is higher on the pedestal of young defenders than Mavropanos. Sven Mislintat has been high on this kid for years, and if he believes that he is worth the rumored £35m investment, then I believe he is too.

The question we then have to address is how his addition would affect the rumored (and severely underwhelming) £50m transfer “warchest.”

More from Pain in the Arsenal

Now, granted, these transfer budgets have never proven true before, so there is no reason why we should believe it now, but again, for the sake of argument, let’s assume it is. Soyuncu blows that transfer module to bits.

It would leave just £15m for additional signings, which would mean that, in order to land the other needs – of which there are quite a few, the club would have to make some significant sales. And that is where things get dicey.

We need improvements in key areas. Absolutely we do. But there are going to have to be a lot of sales to try and recoup the money needed to properly upgrade the team. Suddenly it makes sense why a price has been named for Aaron Ramsey, because the Gunners need a garage sale if they hope to raise the funds necessary.

Which, I needn’t remind you, is not a good thing. In fact, it is very bad, and it is nerve-wracking. If Soyuncu is the defender that Mislintat thinks solves the problem, that is great, but who do we lose in the process?
