Arsenal: Calum Chambers the best reinforcement available
By Josh Sippie
Arsenal’s defense needs help, but I shouldn’t have to remind you that reinforcements can come in many forms, and Calum Chambers is one such form.
Knowing that Arsenal are inching closer to spending £35m on a 21-year-old defender from Bundesliga 2, many fans may be a bit jaded over the future defensive prospects of this team. For instance, how will they improve without adding improvements?
The answer to that is so simple that I’m just gushing over how easy it is to answer – Calum Chambers.
There are two ways teams can improve their current player lot. They can add new players or they can allow current players to grow and mature in a role.

Caglar Soyuncu is a potential addition that will add strength and future prospectus, and Konstantinos Mavropanos can be leaned on more heavily going forward. But the true upgrade in defense comes from putting more trust in Calum Chambers.

Chambers is going to be 24 this year, which is about the time you want to start seeing a bonafide product out of a player who was once propped up by potential. Which is convenient, seeing as how, by the end of last year, Chambers was the defender I had the most confidence in to do his job and, literally, not screw up.
I know why people aren’t keen on it. It’s not a glitzy, glamorous decision, to trust someone in a system that has been deemed broken. But I shouldn’t have to point out how positive he was on that back line, and how few mistakes he made.
Let me say that again – how few mistakes he made.
Chambers was a consummate professional out there. Even in the horrid match against Ostersunds, he still rallied himself after the putrid mistakes and got himself back into the game. You can’t ask much more out of a player.
This is someone you can build around. He is a no-nonsense defender, which is great for a defense that is known primarily for their ability to churn out nonsense. Give him a summer of knowing his new charge and he has the mental acuity to get into the mode of being a more trusted member of the team.
