Arsenal have found their guy, and it’s not the guy many expected – Unai Emery. But for as jarring as this all is, there is something important to remember.

Arsenal have yet to make the announcement (as of writing) but it would appear that Unai Emery is the next manager, despite the heaping of reports that it would be Mikel Arteta, followed by the reports that it would be Max Allegri, followed by the reports that it would be Thomas Tuchel.

Basically, everyone who has ever been linked with the job has at one point or another been reported to be “in line” for the job. Perhaps the biggest difference is that there are some actual reputable sources saying that Unai Emery is the next manager, which means that he is the next manager.

But my point is gradually coming out, and it pertains to one super important thing to keep in mind regarding this appointment.

That’s simply this – that the media, and all of these reports, are speculative. We don’t know what went on behind closed doors. We don’t know how the interview process was and, chances are, we never will know for sure because the club isn’t going to say much more than that he is the next manager.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

I’m bringing this up because of all the doubts being cast about Unai Emery, most of them involve the interview process, and how the Gunners seemed to do an about-face and choose Emery out of nowhere. Many considered it a “rash,” sudden decision.

But again, as I have been meticulously stating, that is all according to the media reports. For all we know, all of these interviews were done one after another, each manager was “lined up” after they were known to have interview, and in the second interview process, Emery smashed it and was given the job.

It’s pretty simple – we don’t know what exactly happened. But whatever happened, Ivan Gazidis believes that Emery is the last cog in this machine that he is now the captain of, and he hasn’t steered us wrong in the short time that he has been putting all of this together.

All we know for sure (actually, nothing), is that Unai Emery is the next manager. The process itself is a bit of a muddled racket, and we don’t know anything about it other than what you want to believe.
