There was a time when Grzegorz Krychowiak was the greatest idea ever. But Arsenal are in a different place now, and that dream is past due.

If you think I’m bad now, with my endless praise of Granit Xhaka, you have no idea how bad I would have been had Arsenal landed Grzegorz Krychowiak. To me, he was the greatest thing that could possibly happen to our club – only he never did.

Back when Wojciech Szczesny was still a thing and we actually had hope at keeper, there were increasing amounts of rumors that the Polish battle tank would come to the Emirates, as he was best mates with Szczesny and he was the defensive midfielder we so desperately needed.

Not to mention that he could deputize as a centerback too. He was a dream come true. He was nearing his prime and everything looked peachy.

But he wouldn’t leave Unai Emery’s side, except to fail at West Brom, and now there is that lingering question of whether or not he will now leave Emery’s side. Could Arsenal finally get their prodigal midfielder?

Better question – do they want him?

More from Pain in the Arsenal

This is coming from the biggest Krychowiak fan in the northeastern United States seaboard (self-proclaimed). I will take him at the club in a heartbeat solely because of who he is as a player. He is Sead Kolasinac and Granit Xhaka combined and to me, that’s a dream.

My fanboy self is over the moon that Xhaka and Krychowiak could be in the same midfield. I’ve put endless FIFA ultimate teams together with that exact pairing.

However, let my practicality step in for a moment. Both of these guys are slow. Very slow. And unless you intend on sitting Xhaka, which you absolutely shouldn’t, then starting the two of them together, barring a heavy regiment of wind-sprints this summer, you may be in for a spot of trouble when you face a blazing squad like Liverpool.

That said, I would still take Krychowiak in a heartbeat, despite him being three years past due. At the very least, given his diminishing status in the world of football, he could find a sweet spot deputizing as a centerback and playing an added enforcer role. And, give the competitor that he is, he always has that chance to up and take a starting role for himself.

Plus, seeing as how PSG won’t be using him and West Brom even failed to find a use for him, he has to come cheap. Transfermarkt has him listed around £15m. Which, by the way, would be a far sounder investment than Sokratis.
