Arsenal are reportedly ready to give Lucas Perez another shot, but where exactly does he fit? Answer: So many places. Welcome back, Lucas.

Arsenal is a club of opportunity, but for Lucas Perez, that wasn’t true. Arsene Wenger inexplicably wanted nothing to do with Lucas and would only use him when there was absolutely, positively no other option available.

It didn’t make any sense. Lucas played primarily in side competitions, either as a striker (rarely) or as a winger (more often) and it was clear what the initial attraction was to him. He was a lot like Alexandre Lacazette – a deft finisher, yes, but also fantastic at linking up play and creating chances for his team mates.

With Unai Emery now in charge of the club, the talk is that Lucas Perez will be given another shot. So now the question is – is there a way back?

Short answer: Hell yeah.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

Long answer: Yes. Because if you look at what Arsenal currently have up front, they have a dynamic duo. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette are top class and can’t be touched. But you need more than two strikers, even at that high quality, if you want to compete universally across all different competitions.

Danny Welbeck also factors in, which just adds to the excitement. Lucas is everything that Welbeck isn’t. He’s a deft finisher and a creator. Welbeck is a physical stallion and an engine. That can be a fantastic duo as well. But then again, Welbeck may be headed out, so Lucas could be his (free) replacement.

Better yet, Lucas doesn’t even have to play striker. He can play out wide, where he has the chance to create chances – something he is very good at – while also drifting inside to fire shots with his potent left foot.

This revolution is all about options. It’s about being resourceful, clever and finding ways to get legs up on the competition without having the spending power to do so.

Lucas is a fantastic candidate for such a task. All he wanted to was to succeed at Arsenal. He was thrilled to be here and just wanted his chance. Which he never got. A year later, handing him that chance under a new manager, you will see Lucas at his peak best, no doubt about it.

Is there a way back? You bet your arse there is. Lucas is an Arsenal-style attacker and this is Arsenal. So long as that is the case, there will be room for him to make headway into the first team picture.
