Arsenal: It’s not Emil Forsberg that’s the problem here

Arsenal have been “begged” to sign Emil Forsberg, but again, this is a silly suggestion. Not because of who Forsberg is, but because of what we already have.

Arsenal’s wealth of creative talents is well known. To the point that they are often mocked for filling every midfield position, both defensive and attacking, with attacking, No. 10 model midfielders.

The mocking is justified though. Just look at their first team set-up. Everyone can play No. 10 and often prefers to. No to mention that just about all their youngsters are being forced to play as wingers or wingbacks, yet they want to play No. 10 as well.

We are so spoiled that I’m even enjoying the idea of Mesut Ozil being sold, because I’d like to see that money invested into other parts of the pitch. Maybe a sturdy defensive midfielder or an elite winger – something on the peripherals of our needs, but still pretty damn important.

Then comes Emil Forsberg, one of the best creative attacking midfielders to emerge in the past few years. 19 assists two years ago, followed by a shortened season this year that bred worse results as RB Leipzig struggled in the Bundesliga, but the talent is still there. He’s only 26 years old and there’s no doubt that he can make a splash on a bigger stage.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

Arsenal is a bigger stage, and I have no doubts he would make a splash here, utilizing his upgraded attacking options to near-perfection.

And other people think so too. Ex-Arsenal man Anders Limpar has “begged” the Gunners to sign the Swedish play-maker. But this is all a bit much. Not because Forsberg isn’t worth it, he is absolutely worth it.

It’s the nature of who he is. Yes, we need attacking options. We need wingers desperately. But Forsberg is as  much a winger as Mesut Ozil is. Because Forsberg is like a higher-energy Ozil. Which is the last thing the Gunners need. By a longshot.

Unless there are super secret plans to offload a creative midfielder, then Forsberg serves no purpose other than to pour money into one of the strongest areas at the club. And that doesn’t seem very productive to me.

Plus, if he really is going to cost £50m+, then get out of town. I like the idea of a third elite creator. Sounds like fun. But Arsenal have about six things on their shopping list before they should even be thinking about another No. 10.
