Arsenal need a midfielder in the worst possible way, but that’s all it should be – midfielder. Lucas Torreira is that midfielder, with nothing else needed.

The to-do list for Arsenal this summer is widely known and not very widely debated. Midfielder, defense, keeper, wingers. Some side needs were there as well – a right back, maybe a second winger. But all in all, everyone knew what we needed.

In the midfield department, there were candidates galore, but the key to this position was simply that they only needed one guy. One guy of specifics, though. They needed one guy who could fit the role they’ve been lacking, preferably for the long haul, and someone that could be relied upon regularly.

As it stands, the Gunners midfield is strong as can be in potential, with a good deal of strength in the present as well.

Between Granit Xhaka and Aaron Ramsey, they have perpetual starters capable of some pretty amazing things together. Add in the stay of Ainsley Maitland-Niles and the potential goes through the roof.

Mohamed Elneny serves as a fantastic rotational option, still with upside as he isn’t even in his prime yet.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

Jack Wilshere is still a question, but it’s assumed he will be leaving. If he stays, he provides more upside and more rotational power.

As you can see, there is a need, but a very specific one. Too much would be clutter for no reason, but too little would be a noticeable gap come next year. They need someone to do what Wilshere was supposed to do this past year, but with more defensive work.

They need someone to complete the midfield trio. Jean Michael Seri looked like a fantastic option. The Nice midfielder fits the billing and has ambitions to push beyond Ligue 1. But at 26-years-old and with an acclimation period to account for, the risk is there, even if it isn’t much.

Lucas Torreira is so obviously the solution that the Gunners were willing to pay more than his release clause just to beat off the competition.

And why do we think that is?

Because he fits the billing to a tee. A long-term solution with present day relevance, the versatility to do all that we want him to do and so much upside that this midfield would be a menacing force.

But it needs to stop there. Torreira and move on to another position. There is nothing to gain from adding Torreira and Seri. The midfield was a problem at times last year, but as they settled in, they proved just how strong they can be.
