Arsenal have been extending all kinds of midfielders, but still Aaron Ramsey remains unsecured. Is this a sign that things aren’t as peachy as we thought?

If you read my stuff often, you know that I hate speculation. But sometimes there is just no way around it, because the mind wanders, and as we are all tortured Arsenal fans, it wanders to some dark places, and my dark places has found Aaron Ramsey in a shirt other than the red and white.

It seems like just yesterday I, and many others, were writing off the Ramsey drama as an arbitrary concern. Of course he was going to sign a new deal, both he and Unai Emery said they wanted to work with each other.

End of story, right?

But here we are, weeks later, with the World Cup kicking off an everything, and Ainsley Maitland-Niles has signed a huge new deal. A deal that means that he is getting what he wants (a midfield role), otherwise why would he sign it?

He’s here to replace someone, to take his first team chances. Again, otherwise why would he sign the thing?

Now Granit Xhaka has signed a new deal that has me simply over the moon, because Unai Emery is on the same team as me, the Pro-Xhaka, forget the fools team.

Yet still we wait for Ramsey to be made official. Now, I don’t want to drum up drama where there isn’t any. (Really, I don’t). But why is it that everyone else has signed on so easily while Ramsey, who was supposedly in talks long before these two, has not?

Is it because he is thinking about his future? Is it because his contract is not as simple and easy to sign as Xhaka’s or Maitland-Niles’? Potentially. But in the meantime, in our constant pursuit of perfection, I want Ramsey solidified so that this midfield can begin to take shape for the long haul.

In truth, it didn’t need much. Someone like Lucas Torreira puts them well into the realm of safety and security for a very, very long time. The talent in the midfield is superb, it’s just a matter of fitting everything together.

With Xhaka and Maitland-Niles locked down, it’s just down to Ramsey to ensure that we don’t have to build a heck of a lot more than we intended. Those are three guys that you can rely on to do their thing on a weekly basis.
