Arsenal now have a transfer fee reported with Mario Gotze, meaning it’s time to pay attention. I guess he does serve one potential purpose.

Arsenal are being more heavily tied to Mario Gotze, now with a price tag accompanying the rumor of £18m. As I’ve said previously, modest price tag included, I just don’t see why we would want this move, not to mention the shamefulness of going back for another Dortmund product.

But, seeing as how it is often my job to find the positives in things, I guess the thing I can pull from this is that Gotze could conceivably be Jack Wilshere‘s replacement, should he decide that his future lies elsewhere.

Gotze, like Wilshere, has always had a ton of potential and Gotze, unlike Wilshere, has gotten closer to reaching that peak. He’s had seasons of near 20 goal contributions and never played much more than 2000 minutes in a season.

However, since returning to Dortmund, he hasn’t been able to get near that mark again. Although, Dortmund moving on certainly didn’t help the situation at hand.

By that standard, the still-only 26-year-old has some massive upside that could be reached. Again, very similar to Wilshere in that sense. Which is why I see Gotze as the entirely unnecessary Wilshere replacement.

I say unnecessary because, at 26, you really should be somewhere near a consistent performer, and while Wilshere isn’t, Gotze is a bit closer to being called that.

I also say unnecessary because, while yes, all teams should have a few guys who are living on their potential, the Gunners already have those guys. They have Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Reiss Nelson, etc. They don’t need another 26-year-old that could amount to something if all the pieces fall into place.

Not just that, but I don’t think Wilshere needs replacing at all. If the Lucas Torreira rumors are true, then that is all we need. Wilshere ideally would have replaced Santi Cazorla, but seeing as how he didn’t, Torreira does. And that is what we need – a Cazorla replacement, not a Wilshere one. Because be honest with yourself, would you rather have a prime Cazorla or a prime Wilshere?

I just don’t understand the Gotze connection and what he would bring. The upside is tremendous, but it was tremendous with Wilshere too. So, that being the case, why not just save money and extend Wilshere rather than re-acclimating everything with Gotze?
