Arsenal: Jack Wilshere circus symptomatic of modern media
By Josh Sippie
Arsenal surprisingly don’t have a lot of drama this summer, so it’s no surprise that the good ol’ media is drumming up drama where there isn’t any.
This summer seemed like it was going to be a hectic collection of madness for Arsenal. Yet they managed to take care of a lot of their problems early in the process.
The January transfer window was a massive success, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Henrikh Mkhitaryan arriving and Alexis Sanchez finally being cut loose. The new manager was appointed very early as well – or rather, right on schedule, as they wanted it before the World Cup and they did it.
Even the transfer market is being friendly to the Gunners. They’ve had little to no problem identifying and pursuing the right kinds of players and the right price tags have been found as well. Again – remarkably easy. There isn’t a whole lot for tabloids to key off on.

Only in the contract department are they finding their field day. With Aaron Ramsey in need of a deal and, more time-sensitive, Jack Wilshere, the media has the circus they want.
Wilshere’s situation has been interpreted and misinterpreted so many times that you can find an article defending or attacking any potential stance. Meaning that there is absolutely nothing known about his future – it’s all hearsay and the media’s insistence on spinning their own narrative.

Take, for instance, recent “developments.”
Wilshere was supposedly told by Unai Emery that he wasn’t a big part of the plans going forward and, in response, the rumor started that he was absolutely, positively leaving, without a shadow of a doubt.
Now, there is a conflicting report from a conflicting tabloid that Wilshere could stay “after talks with Unai Emery.”
Again, the one thing that we may actually be able to pull from this is that maybe – and only maybe – Wilshere did have talks with Emery, as it would make sense for him to do so, with his contract running up in less than two weeks.
But everything else is just someone’s opinion. It’s just someone speculating what they believe Unai Emery told Wilshere given the circumstances that he is in. None of this is grounded in anything more than that.

It’s unlikely that Wilshere will stay, but one way or another, of all the situations that could play out, eventually someone’s guess is going to be right. But until then, they are just guesses and nothing more.
