12. Shkodran Mustafi

Shkodran Mustafi made several high-profile errors — the most notable was his dumbfounding positiong from a Manchester City goal kick that allowed Sergio Aguero to bump him out of the way, race through on goal and put City 1-0 up in the EFL Cup final, a scoreline that they would never look back from.

The nature and the coverage of the mistakes has tainted many people’s viewpoint of the German’s performances this season. Certainly, there was much to be desired and it is still difficult to trust such an error-prone defender, but he was not the worst defender in the squad. Far from it.

It perhaps tells more of Arsenal’s poor season that Mustafi is ranked this highly, rather than his own performance level. Nevertheless, Mustafi was better then many would dare give him credit for. He excelled against Chelsea on several occasions, he was very good in the Europa League, and he performed well in the first north London derby all the way back in November in which he scored the first goal. Not as bad as many think, but still not that good.
