9. Danny Welbeck

Akin to Elneny, this is another case of a player carving out a role for himself. Throughout his development at Manchester United, Danny Welbeck was always cast as the next big star striker. But as Sir Alex Ferguson left and other managers did not see the same potential, his role diminished and he eventually moved south.

At Arsenal, Welbeck found his niche this past season: a hard-working, industrious, versatile attacking threat who can play through the middle and out-wide, is perfect for counter-attacking football, and has the discipline and diligence to fulfil his defensive duties when against the best teams, especially away from home.

His performances in the Europa League were particularly influential — both legs against AC Milan and the inspiration for the second leg against CSKA Moscow. He was hard-working against Chelsea early in the year, and began to score crucial goals at crucial times.  He is not the star striker that Ferguson thought he would be. But he’s still very useful.
