8. Calum Chambers

After returning from a year-long loan at Middlesbrough, forecasts for the season ahead for Calum Chambers were extremely varied. Was his time at Arsenal finished having slipped behind Rob Holding in the pecking order? Could he build on a solid but not spectacular year up north? Would he find his best position and stick to it?

Initially, the signs were troubling. Played at right-back and struggling in a back three, it wasn’t until he felt more assured as the season wore on that he showed his best self. But by the end of the year, he was the unquestioned third centre-half, was fully trusted by Arsene Wenger, so much so that the Arsenal manager had no hesitation in turning to him when Laurent Koscielny hobbled off in the most important game of the whole season, and was pushing the inconsistent pairing of Shkodran Mustafi and Koscielny hard for their starting spots.

Chambers is still a question of potential. He has mistakes in him, his positioning and marking can be a little loose at times. But this was the best season of his young career thus far. Hopefully, there’s more to come.
