20. Alex Iwobi

Perhaps expectation killed Alex Iwobi. In 1844 minutes of Premier League football, he recorded five assists and three goals, an average involvement in a goal every 230 minutes, which is better than one every three games. Only four players managed more assists per 90 minutes than Iwobi and only two players who are still in the squad created more chances per 90 minutes.

And yet, even with those somewhat middling statistics, there is this prominent feeling that Iwobi underwhelmed last season. And to some extent he did. But the problem, for me, is that he did not progress, not that he himself was poor.

There was an expectation that he was ready to press onto the next level. He didn’t. If anything, he is a less confident, direct and productive player than what he was when he first broke onto the scene over two years ago. Iwobi never developed. That was his problem. He may not get many more seasons to do so.
