LONDON, ENGLAND – APRIL 26: Antoine Griezmann of Atletico Madrid goes past Laurent Koscielny of Arsenal on his way to scoring his sides first goal during the UEFA Europa League Semi Final leg one match between Arsenal FC and Atletico Madrid at Emirates Stadium on April 26, 2018 in London, United Kingdom. 17. Laurent Koscielny

The first real senior regular to be ranked, which perhaps tells of the Frenchman’s struggles. Laurent Koscielny was poor for large portions of the season, especially in the second half. He looked slow, he made more mistakes, and he contributed to one of the worst Arsenal defences in years.

There is a very real reason for Koscielny’s troubles. An ailing Achilles was clearly hindering his freedom — he eventually ruptured it against Atletico Madrid — and so there is a reasonable excuse to be made for his disappointing level.

But then there is also the question of leadership. The Gunners don’t have any. Koscielny is the club captain with Mertesacker rarely on the pitch. He offered little in the way of character-leading influence. His time may be coming to an end.
