16. Petr Cech

The wide-spread desire among the fan base for Arsenal to sign a goalkeeper this summer tells the Petr Cech story perfectly. It was a poor season from an individual who was expected to be one of the more reliable members of the squad.

Cech made six errors that led to goals in the Premier League last season. He made 1.66 saves per goal conceded last season. Contrast that to David de Gea, who was at 3.46 saves per goal conceded. Moreover, Cech had an expected goals-conceded of 45. He conceded 45.

His experience is still invaluable, and the communication, leadership and organisation that he offers is vital for a defence that is lost with him, nevermind without him. But Cech has never been a great shot-stopper. And now he’s added a whole lot of mistakes to his reportoire. Not a good season for a goalkeeper who is now 36.
