Arsenal certainly have a lot of needs this summer, many are being addressed, but Ever Banega fits one too, believe it or not.

The laundry list of things for Arsenal to do this summer was extensive, and it felt like one of those summers where some things would just go unfixed.

But maybe it just felt that way because, for as much as we all love Arsene Wenger, he had a nasty habit of just not addressing certain needs. A secondary striker, depth in midfield, fullback options, etc.

There just always seemed to be that lingering question of what might have happened had they just addressed all their issues in the summer transfer window. Perhaps things might have turned out differently, but that’s a dangerous game to play.

Thus far into the summer, it looks as though all those voids that have been neglected over the past decade are being taken seriously. Stephan Lichtsteiner as the first signing shows that.

A secondary right back with veteran qualities was not on the top of the list, but it was on the list, and that should be good enough for it to be taken care of in the end.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

Ever Banega fits into a similar position. No, he isn’t going to knock the socks off of anyone. He isn’t going to turn heads and revolutionize the way that Arsenal play the game. But he does serve a very important purpose at a very reasonable price.

Arsenal’s midfield was a tad thin at times this past year, and it’s gotten thinner with the exit of Jack Wilshere. The hopes of Santi Cazorla have also diminished, as he has left the club.

In order to field a midfield three like the Gunners do, they need six midfielders capable of playing it. It’s math. With four competitions they hope to compete in, that’s the bare minimum. It was last summer that we took the same approach with the back three – we went in with six centerbacks.

Let’s just clarify that by saying that injuries were not a problem with the defense. Everything else was.

It’s all about safety. You have to, have to, be prepared for anything, and given that we had two midfielders depart, we need two midfielders in response.

Banega isn’t Cazorla, because we can’t afford another Cazorla right now. But we can afford a Cazorla-type, and Banega is something close enough to be that.

Apparently this is moving along rather quickly. Which is great. When you see what you want, go for it. If that is Banega, then go for it.
