Arsenal: Lucas Torreira better be more than ‘expected’

Arsenal already have two new players thus far into the transfer window, but Lucas Torreira is the big arrival. And he is arriving, right?

Arsenal’s summer is going well. They have a new right back with a demonstrative personality and leadership capabilities. They have a new keeper that is essentially like a Wojciech Szczesny do-over.

And they have Lucas Torreirra, a midfielder wrecker who used to be a striker, has been favorably compared to N’Golo Kante, has a quick, driving first step, is only 22-years-old and, after getting his first World Cup start against Russia and gave us a sneak peak into exactly what we want from him, or from any midfielder, for that matter.

Torreira could be seen tracking back and fighting tooth and nail for any and every ball that was near him. And if it wasn’t near him, he made it his priority to change that.

Everyone assumes that this deal is done. That when the World Cup is over for Uruguay, whenever that may be, that Torreira will officially be announced.

And a recent report seems to solidify that, claiming that Unai Emery ‘expects’ the Torreira deal to be done.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

I don’t want to sit here arguing semantics, but isn’t ‘expects’ a couple steps below it being done? All of the signs point to the deal being done. The price that the Gunners were supposedly willing to pay (£26m) is the exact cost that the Sampdoria president admitted that Torreira had been sold for.

So that’s all we need to know right? Done deal, no questions asked, all that remains is an official announcement.

I don’t like the word ‘expects’ because it insinuates that it isn’t done, and that something could go wrong. Now, granted, this isn’t an exact quote from Emery, it’s just an unsubstantiated report, but regardless, it has become clear just how important Torreira is.

Just like Gelson Martins, Torreira is such a bargain and such a perfect solution, that to settle for anything else would be a massive disappointment. Torreira is becoming the crown jewel of this transfer window because of the context of not just where he would be playing, but who he would be replacing – Jack Wilshere and/or Santi Cazorla.

Yet if you see him play, there is no doubting that he has the capabilities of filling that role.

Maybe I’m just letting my paranoia get to me. Surely Torreira is done at this point, right? There’s no reason to worry.
