Arsenal want Caglar Soyuncu, and he wants them. So what this all comes down to is if the money is there for the move to be made.

It’s not very often that you get a good look into the inner workings of a transfer of any type. That holds doubly true for Arsenal. It was never clear who was in charge, who did the heavy-lifting, who controlled the purse, so on and so forth.

But with Caglar Soyuncu, it’s perfectly clear what is happening. Soyuncu is a massively talented young centerback, who could be a surprise solution for the defensive woes this club suffered from last season.

Soyuncu has been linked with the Gunners for months now, before the summer even started. Right from the off, though, it seemed like an odd link. A second-tier German player for £35m.

That’s a bit much. But the rumor hasn’t fizzled and died. It has carried on and, more and more, the people involved are opening up about it.

First it was Caglar Soyuncu himself opening up about the move, saying very clearly: “I hope I go to Arsenal. I really want to play in the Premier League, but everything depends on the team.”

There’s no need to play any guessing games there. Soyuncu wants the move, he called them by name. Game. Set. Match.

But it gets even more transparent, as Soyuncu’s agent opened up and said that Sven Mislintat is indeed interested, as the reports initially said when this rumor was starting to find its legs. So here we have interest from both sides, as admitted to by parties involved in the very move.

What’s the hold-up, then?

The price, obviously. Reports indicated that the Gunners were trying to get a cheaper fee than what was originally required. And all I can do is sit here and think – if you want a player, and if a player wants you, then go get that player. Because that mutual affection doesn’t exist for no reason.

It’s all about the money. Which makes me think that it’s always been all about the money. So many players that have been linked to the Gunners have derailed amidst rumors of prices being off. In this case, the difference is about £10m, which seems like chump change.

This is shaping up to be an opportunity missed. Anytime a move is this clearly in favor of everyone, but gets held up due to fees, you have to question the man with the purse, and we all know who that is.
