Arsenal are reportedly set to agree to a new four-year deal with Calum Chambers, which is the solution that we needed in this defense.

Everybody wants some big, elaborate solution to the Arsenal defensive crisis. As if some massive new signing is going to change the fortunes of the club. And it probably would, to be fair, but there’s no point in going all out if you don’t have to.

The Gunners have a wealth of young defensive talents on their books. These young talents, when called upon, have performed in higher capacity.

Calum Chambers was the most impressive of the bunch. In a season that was riddled with personal mistakes made by both Shkodran Mustafi and Laurent Koscielny, Chambers was a massively reliable defender.

Throughout his years with the club, he has weeded out his problems, become a no-nonsense guy with physicality and intelligence on that back line.

Unai Emery has seen it too.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

According to reports, Calum Chambers has signed a new four-year deal to re-up on his deal signed last October. Much like Granit Xhaka‘s new deal, which wasn’t entirely necessary, you may not think that this one was that necessary either.

But it solidifies him as a current and present member of this new era of Arsenal Football Club.

According to that same report, Chambers was given the reassurance that he would have every chance in the world to be the starting man next to Sokratis. The point is to erase the mistakes. And the best way to do that is to build a defense without the mistake-makers.

Koscielny’s injury knocks him out of the running, but Mustafi is still there. He’s valuable in his potential, but it would make a ton of sense to start the season without him back there, just to reinforce that those mistakes are not tolerable.

If Sokratis and Chambers are sent out there to start the season, so much is accomplished – namely that previous point, that mistakes aren’t okay. But it would also reward Chambers for a job well done, which this contract already essentially kick-starts.

It would be a brand new start for the defense, but a brand new start was exactly what was needed after the mistakes we suffered all last year. Give new players a chance when the previous players were inadequate. It makes a lot more sense than giving the same players the same chances to prove that they can be good enough.
