Arsenal: Ideally, Lucas Torreira and Aaron Ramsey completely unrelated
By Josh Sippie
Arsenal’s midfield still has some loose pieces to fit into place, two of which are Lucas Torreira and Aaron Ramsey. Ideally, though, they are independent pieces.
Arsenal have an exciting foundation in their midfield, and that foundation clearly shares the vision that Unai Emery brings, because they’ve been so keen to sign on and give it a go. As it stands, we have Granit Xhaka and Ainsley Maitland-Niles in place, with Mohamed Elneny sitting behind them.
The two loose pegs, per say, that still need to be secured on the game board are Aaron Ramsey and Lucas Torreira. The former just needs a new deal and the latter just needs to be officially announced.
It only occurred to me today, in a random fit of “Ramsey panic” that perhaps the reason for the Ramsey delay is because they are waiting on a decision from Torreira.

As in, if Torreira signs on, Ramsey is gone. If not, Ramsey stays.
However, I’m happy to say that as soon as this idea happened upon my consciousness, I killed it, because in this ideal world that all Gooners live in before the start of another season, there is no place for evil thoughts like that.

Torreira and Ramsey are not related. They can’t be. Torreira is our long overdue N’Golo Kante and Ramsey is our uncategorized midfield magic man. One does not factor into the future of the other because of how unrelated they are.
In this ideal world, we go into next season with Torreira, Xhaka and Ramsey sharing the midfield as a dynamic trio of ball-winning, precision passing and goal-scoring prowess. It doesn’t get much better than that. It’s so good, in fact, that I refuse to accept any other starting three in the midfield, because nothing else sounds so nice and balanced.
The other thing we have to think of is the financial impact. Assuming Torreira is done, which is is, we are very over budget. Ramsey could fetch upwards of £40m, which would more than compensate for the purchases being made.
But again, we can’t think like this, because Torreira is not a Ramsey replacement. He’s a Ramsey compliment. The midfield we had last season was great, it just lacked the ball-winner that Torreira is. And if we want to improve, we have to augment what we had, not start over.

In conclusion, nothing that Torreira does effects anything with Ramsey. We have to believe this because the alternative changes everything too much for me to come to peace with.
