Arsenal are being swayed into the race for Cristian Pavon given his World Cup exploits, but it’s going to fail for the same reasons Lucas Torreira succeeded.

Arsenal need a valid winger like it’s nobody’s business. And Cristian Pavon is a winger. Rocking out at Boca Juniors in his native Argentina, Pavon put up some fantastic numbers at just 22 years of age.

In just under 2300 minutes, Pavon managed six goals and 11 assists in the Primera Division, which is a fantastic return from a winger who can play across the front line.

Argentina, in a World Cup that was not going their way, turned to Cristian Pavon over Sergio Aguero when they moved on to face France. While it didn’t do enough to secure their passage after a 4-3 thriller that saw them bounced.

It was, however, enough to get Pavon some attention. A relatively unknown product going into the competition, Pavon is now being touted as a rising starlet linked to tons of top-tier teams.

And of course, that includes Arsenal.

With a rumored price tag of £27m, Pavon falls in the realm of reasonable, as that’s the same price that the Gunners will be paying for Lucas Torreira. However, unlike Torreira, Pavon was not an established target ahead of time.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

What makes Torreira such a guarantee (yes, guarantee) is that the Gunners were already all in on him before the World Cup, and it’s a damn good thing they were, because Torreira is reaping in attention with his fantastic performances for the Uruguayan dark horses.

Namely his wrecking of Ronaldo. That always helps.

Even still, the sale was already wrapped up for a fee that was not only reasonable, but a complete and total steal.

With Pavon, there was nothing established ahead of time. The Gunners are only getting on the bandwagon now, just like everyone else, but unlike everyone else, the Gunners can’t offer the same kind of transfer fee, the allure of Champions League, nothing like that. They couldn’t even necessarily guarantee a starting role.

At least they shouldn’t be able to. Not with the way this attack is stacking up already.

Torreira’s move to the Emirates succeeded because the Gunners wanted him before anyone else did. Pavon’s move will fail because the Gunners can’t compete with everyone else that is jumping on the bandwagon now.

I love optimism, though, so let’s just pretend like this actually can happen.
