Arsenal have gotten their man, and their man is not Steven N’Zonzi. Their man is Lucas Torreira, and he is showing just how perfect he is.

There’s a certain kind of magic that comes with getting the right person to fill the right role. Arsenal have not excelled at that very much lately. Or rather, they have not excelled at it prior to the new transfer takeover.

A lot of the time, it would be a matter of finding a solution, and not finding the solution. For instance, they needed a striker, so they signed Danny Welbeck. Yes, he was technically a striker, but he wasn’t the man that we needed.

The Gunners needed a midfielder. That was step one. In years past, maybe Steven N’Zonzi would have been the signing that we went for because he is, in fact, a midfielder.

But going beyond just needing a midfielder, the Gunners needed a ball-winner with athleticism, mobility and a little razzmatazz. We’re far removed from Arsene Wenger’s anti-defensive-midfielder sentiments, but I think they still hold true.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

Why confine yourself to a midfielder with only one strength? You are weakening your attack. Unless his defensive contribution is just irreplaceable, then you’re really setting yourself up behind the eightball.

Patrick Vieira, Gilberto Silva, they all had more capacities than just a wrecker. N’Zonzi has hit that ceiling. Torreira’s ceiling hasn’t even been set yet. As such, there is no comparison here, and that would be if they were at the same price. As it stands, N’Zonzi is supposed to cost more than Torreira – how would that even come close to working?

We have Torreira. He’s our solution. Let’s bask in the glory of that solution and let the one missing piece of this midfield put everything together. The rest of the pieces are already in place and don’t need to be modified in any way. All the midfield was missing last year was a bit of added mobility – a fearless pivot.

Jack Wilshere set the precedent a couple of times, but Torreira’s main purpose is to maximize on what Wilshere teased us with. That’s it. If he can do that, we don’t need anyone or anything else.
