Arsenal had several priorities going into the transfer window, but only one that really mattered, and he is the last one to be announced.

Arsenal’s transfers this summer have all been mighty practical. They have addressed all of the major concerns and they did it fairly conclusively, not leaving any room for hesitation or doubt.

And yet, if you look at all the moves, only one was truly do or die. That move was for Lucas Torreira, the midfield ball winner who may perhaps being the last Gunners’ signing of the summer months.

Again, every other move has been great, but none of them have really gripped me as a must-have-or-we-fail kind of moves.

Stephan Lichtsteiner brings so much to the table, and is such a blessing to the leadership void on this club. His intensity is going to be an amazing thing.

Bernd Leno is another who I love that we locked up, but had we for whatever reason not landed him, I wouldn’t have called it the end of the world putting our hopes in Petr Cech and a youngster, mentored by Cech.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

Sokratis was probably the least necessary of them all, though he is certainly still a nice addition. We have so many defenders that I have no doubts that at least two of them will stand out and be reliable first-teamers.

But Lucas Torreira… he is something we just can’t go without. This midfield had some amazing games last season, but the one thing they were consistently lacking in the not-so-amazing games was that energetic catalyst of ball-winning.

Lucas Torreira is that guy, and if you slide him into the spot where Jack Wilshere was, then we come out so much the better. It’s an improvement that we couldn’t have done without, given the exits of Wilshere and Cazorla.

Sure, there are youngsters that will challenge – like Ainsley Maitland-Niles – but all in all, this is Torreira’s role. He was brought in for a reason and that reason was non-negotiable.

This midfield needed an exact solution, and Torreira is exactly that solution. It couldn’t be a better fit.

All of these signings make the team better, but Torreira makes the club so much better. And I don’t even feel nervous beating the drum this much. That’s how much faith I have in the guy.
