Arsenal shouldn’t be expecting much from Mohamed Elneny, but if he is excited, then we should be too. He has some tricks up his sleeve.

Arsenal’s midfield is a beautiful thing right now, now that Lucas Torreira has been added. This coming on the backs of Ainsley Maitland-Niles new deal and the ongoing dynamism between Granit Xhaka and Aaron Ramsey (because I refuse to believe he would ever leave).

There is so much to be excited about here, and it’s even more exciting when you combine that with the attack, which was already pretty perfect, if we’re being honest.

It’s hard to build more on this excitement. We shouldn’t be expecting any more big-time signings or changes. Even if Ramsey is sold, they’re only talking about Andre Gomes as a replacement. Not much excitement coming from that.

So it’s going to have to come from smaller things. And, no offense to him, but Mohamed Elneny is smaller in that he isn’t expected to have a big role with the club, because there just isn’t any room for it. The midfield is built pretty clearly.

But Mohamed Elneny is excited about the upcoming season, and, as if we needed another reason to be, we should be adding to the excitement category solely because we are hearing that our own players are excited.

Why? Because we know why they are excited, for starters.  Because the next era of this football club is packed with amazing players that are only just starting to feel each other out and get onto the pitch together.

Elneny is capable of some remarkable things, however. And that’s the thing. He’s only 25 years old, which makes him one of our younger midfielders in an already young midfield.

I still go back to when Arsene Wenger told us the most obvious thing that he could say – that there is still a lot ahead for Elneny, given his age. He has shown a lot of promise in doing the mental things right. The physical things can be added, and there is still plenty of time for that.

So yet again, we have another reason to be excited, and that reason is simply that Elneny is an open resource. There is so much we can still gain from him, but even if not, he has given us enough already and will continue to, simply in his consistency.

Low expectations often bode well for a player, and Elneny is in that zone right now.
