Five years ago, Mesut Ozil’s transfer inspired every sinew of Arsenal football club. That is what the addition of a world-class player does. They now need another one.

Arsenal have been busy during the transfer market. And rightly so, considering the holes that needed to be filled within the team, Unai Emery and his men have been doing some good business. But we are yet to see a Mesut Ozil like signing, and it is one that, I believe, is needed.

Let’s start by explaining what is meant by a ‘Mesut Ozil like’ singing.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

The Gunners had a shocking start to the 2013/14 season; a 3-1 defeat to Aston Villa at home. What hardened the blow was the inactivity in the transfer market leading up to the game. The only players brought in were Yaya Sanogo and the re-signing of Mathieu Flamini on a free. Very underwhelming and inexcusable for a club with the finances and the publicly proclaimed goals of Arsenal. In fact, it was that season which would see a huge increase of fans turning against Arsene Wenger and the club for their lack of investment towards the team.

Though come deadline day, Wenger managed to pull off a miracle by signing a true superstar in the form of Real Madrid midfielder Mesut Ozil. Arsenal paid a record fee for the German, a reported £42.4 million, which was considered an elite sum for that time. The arrival of Ozil was much-needed considering the lackluster season the Gunners had in the previous year, struggling after selling captain and striker Robin Van Persie and not replacing him with a big-money signing, leaving the Gunners to qualify for the Champions League by the skin of their teeth.

Ozil’s arrival lifted the mood in the dressing room and the results were starting to look positive. Ozil assisted inside the first 11 minutes of his Arsenal debut with a sublime ball to Olivier Giroud for his first of many Premier League assists. The arrival of Ozil led Arsenal to lead the race for the title for 23 weeks out of the 38. Although succumbing to some heavy defeats during the season against a few top sides, the North Londoners would ultimately win the FA cup and break the nine-year trophy drought.

Whilst Aaron Ramsey’s astonishing form may have played a part in all this also, it’s hard not to overlook the mental strength the team gained from the singing of a truly world-class player. And now would be the perfect time to pull off another world-class signing.

It is possible that the board will dig deep into their funds for a big-name singing under the instruction of Unai Emery, and it may most likely be a winger or an attacker of some sort, even after spending more than £70 million on five different players already this summer.

A couple of names being mentioned so far are Ousmane Dembele from Barcelona and Kingsley Coman from Bayern Munich, both very high profile and both very talented youngsters at the top of their game. These two will definitely qualify as an ‘Ozil like’ singing and will surely lift the spirits and confidence of a team who failed to qualify for the Champions League for the second time in 22 years and suffered yet another trophyless season.
