Arsenal are suddenly re-upping their interest in free agent Max Meyer, despite the fee attached. In the worst possible situation, this is the best outcome.

If you’d have asked me two months ago who I wanted to be at Arsenal the most, I’d have told you Max Meyer. To me, he was a reset on Jack Wilshere – a lad with gobs of talent, the complete midfield package, and he was free. Can’t do any better than that.

But then it sounded as though Meyer was getting a bit of an ego trip. The fees attached to signing him were less than attractive and it put the Gunners off the chase. Not to mention the arrival of Lucas Torreira, who was the true ideal solution.

All things considered, the midfield took the perfect shape and Meyer faded from necessity, and faded fast. Even I was opposed to signing him because it seemed like such a waste of time and money. And space, for that matter.

Now, he is re-emerging. All of a sudden, with so few other teams taking a bite at the young German, the Gunners have surfaced as a potential destination yet again.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

If we go after Max Meyer, we are losing Aaron Ramsey. I don’t see any way around that. There is no need for him otherwise. And if we lose Ramsey, we are in the worst situation we could possibly be in following such a promising start to the summer.

But if we lose Aaron Ramsey, then Meyer may be the best possible lift to a very undesirable situation.

Make no mistake about it – Meyer is an immensely talented midfielder who has a diverse array of capabilities at his disposal. His defensive output was a massive boost to Schalke last season, and it was only his first foray into defensive duties.

He still has all the creative abilities lying dormant. These are the same creative abilities that won him so much promise in the beginning of his career. He was meant to be a midfield maestro, but the spot never opened up for him. And so he became a defensive midfielder, and a successful one.

He has both capabilities, which is not all that dissimilar from Ramsey. It all just depends on how you use him.

It’s not a substantial replacement, but if we have to pick someone, you can do a lot worse than Meyer. Like Steven N’Zonzi for instance (had to get that in there).
