Arsenal: A mountain to climb for forgotten Joel Campbell
Based on the number of uncertainties about his future, Joel Campbell has a mountain to climb post-Arsenal as he has too much to prove.
Joel Campbell has been left out of the pre-season Singapore squad indicating his involvement within the first team this year, may be hard to come by if Unai Emery does not see him in his plans. Joel Campbell’s time at Arsenal has been rough to say the least.
Arriving in 2011, the Costa Rica international has been loaned out on 6 different occasions. He only managed to spend one full season at the Emirates in which by he appeared 19 times in the Premier League, scoring 3 goals and assisting 2. Campbell was always a fan favorite and was always supported to start games during the season.
In his first Premier League start, Campbell managed to score the third goal in Arsenal’s 3-0 away win at Liberty stadium against Swansea. This moment would prove to be pivotal as he would soon be involved in many more games during the season, allowing the opportunity to make a mark on the team.
Unfortunately whilst Campbell did have some good performances, he was once again shipped out on loan for the following season and hasn’t played a game for the Gunners since.
After his season with Arsenal, Campbell’s loan situation was not good, failing to instill himself at both the clubs he was loaned to and failing to display breakout performances. With all these unfortunate events it does seem like the Costa Rica international has a mountain to climb to rebuild and revitalize his career.

He is definitely not short of talent meaning he has the ability to playing Europe’s top divisions and considering Arsenal are in the market for a wide attacker, maybe the best thing to do is to recall him into the squad and see what he can bring.
It’s not as if he proved he wasn’t good enough, instead he was merely stripped from his role to contribute to the squad as he was pushed further down the pecking order to a free scoring Theo Walcott who scored over 20 goals in all competition in Campbell’s sophomore year and an ever evolving Oxlade-Chamberlain in an position which Campbell had no room for relating to the formation change of 3-4-3.
You have to feel sorry for the attacker and the bad luck and misfortunes which have held him back. At the age of 26 Campbell should have been well and truly off the mark by now and maybe staying at the Emirates would further dint his career.
The obvious decision for Unai Emery is to sell the player, but in a new turn of events he suddenly begins to rate the player and give him a chance under his wing, it’ll definitely be an uphill battle for Joel Campbell no matter what the outcome.
