Arsenal: Just like that, Yann Sommer has become a distraction
By Josh Sippie
Petr Cech has laid down the law. He won’t be leaving Arsenal. Which means that anything related to Yann Sommer is now a distraction.
Arsenal’s keeper situation was a mess last year. But that’s what can be expected when you have a clear-cut No. 1 and No. 2. There is no competition and if the No. 1 fails, the No. 2 isn’t good enough. There are no consequences, so on and so forth.
Nabbing Bernd Leno solved that. Leno and Petr Cech, it’s a dynamic duo that could definitely accomplish the needs of the club. One with experience, one with potential. And a heck of a lot of middle ground that the two share.
That was thrown into a tizzy when Cech was linked with a move back to Chelsea. It didn’t make a lot of sense in the moment, because it defeated the purposes. Plus David Ospina was a sure-fire exit.
That’s when Yann Sommer appeared and I got excited. Leno vs Sommer for the next half decade or more? Sign me up. That is a fantastic tandem to work with and it works exactly the way it is supposed to work. Both are No. 1’s, both want that starting job. They will maximize each other.

But that didn’t last long, that dream of the dastardly duo. Because Cech has come out and said that he will not be going back to Chelsea, because he is more interested in staying at the Emirates and fighting for his job at the club.
That’s well and good, but it negates any possible link with Sommer. Meaning that any further links are nothing but distractions. So much more than any others because we know, without a shadow of a doubt, that it isn’t going to happen.
Two No. 1 keepers is a party. Three is a damn nuisance, and a formula bound to fail.
We should be happy that Cech is staying, because we will finally be able to see just how well he can help Leno develop into the world class keeper he is meant to be. Again, this is what Wojciech Szczesny was supposed to have.
It’s a bummer though, that Sommer has faded into obscurity so quickly. There would have been a lot of present and future relevance with those two connected and working together in the same net.
Now it’s time to let go. Which honestly isn’t that big of a deal.
