Arsenal welcomed Mesut Ozil back in grand fashion, with the German taking center stage. Is this his wrath? Or can it get even better?

Arsenal beat up PSG pretty badly, toppling the French giants in Singapore by a score of 5-1. It erased all of the talk before the match, of why Mesut Ozil was named team captain among all the other potential options.

Unai Emery spoke up before the match about how Ozil is certainly a candidate for the captaincy, and has what it takes to be a leader on this team, on Emery’s first take in his new digs at the Emirates.

Ozil wasted no time asserting himself, as he scored in the 12th minute and provided an excellent taste of his best.

All of this is obviously coming after a very hot-and-cold season with the Gunners, a new contract with the club, and then a World Cup debacle that saw the German superstar retire after despicable fans voiced their nasty opinions about the maestro.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

The question became how Ozil was going to respond to all of this change. Germany was no longer a safe haven for him and Arsenal arguably hadn’t even become one yet. So how does the German superstar, in some crucial years of his career, rediscover where he belongs?

Most players, when faced with a similar situation, would have a bit of anger in them. Pent-up anger that maybe they seek to unleash on the pitch. While Ozil didn’t look like a raging madman on the pitch, he did look incredibly effective.

Which made me wonder what the wrath of Mesut Ozil actually looks like. Does he get angry? Does he bottle that anger and save it for the next time he is on the pitch so he can unleash hell on the opposition or does he let it eat him up?

It always looked to be more of the latter. But after seeing his post-World Cup response, I have to wonder if Ozil’s wrath doesn’t take the form of increased effort or ferocity, but rather just optimism, which is something that he needs just as much as a kickstart sometimes.

I want to see how Ozil can fit into this team for the long haul. Because that is what he committed to. If it’s anything like what we saw against PSG, then the wrath of Ozil is just as beautiful as you’d expect it to be.
