Arsenal: Matteo Guendouzi is a wild card, and that’s just fine.
By Josh Sippie
Arsenal brought in Matteo Guendouzi to play a sort of undefined role, but the excitement is massive around him. Still, he is a wild card, and that’s just fine.
Arsenal have two new, exciting options to watch in the midfield. Their immediate needs have been filled across the board, excluding any pending departures. This is a very rounded team with a lot of points of pride.
However, this was accomplished after just three signings. After those three initial signings, all of the dire needs were accomplished. That is, unless you think we need wingers, which is a valid point, you’re not alone.
Still, it’s the fourth signing that may be the most exciting – Matteo Guendouzi. Not in the here and now, because we have no idea what he means for the here and now, but going forward.
And hell, maybe in the here and now too. That’s the exciting thing about him – we really don’t know what he can do or what he may become. And no matter what happens, it’s all just fine. Thus far into the preseason, he has been fantastic. He’s been one of the better performers out there.

That may change when the season rolls around, but it will change one of two ways. Either he excels and proves himself a fantastic signing, or he struggles, requires some time to acclimate, and grows into the role with time.
Whichever happens, the nature of the signing permits it. There are quite a few people, however, that are starting to drum up the hype train for Guendouzi. Again, it’s not like that’s the worst thing in the world. There’s a lot to be excited about.
But the very nature of his transfer almost restricts any hype at all. Because, again, he is a wildcard. He is a signing that is meant for the future, can have some present-day impact, but doesn’t need to, yet will still hope to excel at a faster rate than most.
It’s hard to make any predictions regarding what Guendouzi is going to do this year. And let me go ahead and say that one more time – that’s perfectly fine. The less we expect, the more we can be excited. There isn’t really a risk of expecting too much because of all the other talent that is in this midfield, so I don’t even feel the need to cover that option.
Call him a floater, of sorts. He can fill in when needed, with the upside to seriously throw some chaos into the mix if the opportunity arises and he proves up to the challenge. It’s all about freedom with this young man. Both he and the club have a lot of freedom regarding how this season will go. And, again, that’s a good thing.
