Arsenal are on the road to recovery, but damn it’s not going to be an easy road. So buckle in for the long haul, ladies and gentlemen, because it won’t always be fun.

Oh, how I’ve missed the feeling following an Arsenal loss riddled with personal mistakes and unfulfilled aspirations. It’s a different kind of sorry than ordinary sorry. It needs it’s own term. You can’t take your eyes off the match, because you swear they can still come back, but inevitably, it only gets worse.

The changes are in place, they are taking hold, and slowly but surely these changes will start to sprout new results and new things to be excited about, but right now, those seeds are just seeds, and teams like City and Liverpool are already fully blossomed weeds choking the life out of our precious seeds.

This point was made during the game – that we can’t be too hasty expecting this club to look like what Guardiola and Klopp have done with their respective charges.

They are in full swing. They are in their new era. They had to go through these same growing pains and, guess what? It sucked for their fans. They knew it was going to turn around, they had all the pieces in place. They just had to wait for it.

Now we do too. And guess what? It sucks. In a way, Arsene Wenger did spoil us, because at least we knew what we could rely on. Only when it started going bad did we start to invest in some new seeds, to stay on that analogy.

Now that the transition is in place, it’s reasonable to think that it could take years to see the fruits of this labor. This year alone, anything could happen. But if the worse does happen – and by the worse, I mean we can’t improve upon that 6th place finish – we have to remember that patience is the key here.

It’s going to suck, waiting for everything to happen, but Emery deserves our patience, same as Klopp and Guardiola deserved theirs.

There were positives against City. And Kyle Martino made a good point, last year, City ran rampant over the Gunners. That didn’t happen this time. Personal mistakes were still everywhere, but it wasn’t as bad.

That’s progress. Slow, agonizing progress. And as long as that slow march marches on, then I think we should be just fine.
