4. Mesut Ozil quiet again

It’s been a frustrating start to the season for Mesut Ozil. Maligned for his performances against Manchester City and Chelsea, and then being hooked off early in the second half in the latter, missing the West Ham match through a mysterious illness, and then suffering the turmoil of rumours regarding a bust-up between and Unai Emery, it’s safe to say that this hasn’t been the start to the year that the German would have hoped for.

And this was very much more of the same. He certainly didn’t play as poorly as he did in his first two appearances, but this was another quiet, somewhat anonymous display, with his creative influence very much diminished and difficult to seek out.

If Ozil doesn’t improve his performances soon, Emery has shown a willingness to substitute and drop anyone he wants. Ozil must adapt to the style that Emery is implementing. If he doesn’t, he will be out the door. Make no bones about it.
