Arsenal: There should be no Bernd Leno doubt, he hasn’t even played yet
By Josh Sippie
Arsenal fans are excited to see Bernd Leno. There’s no reason to doubt the guy before we’ve even seen him play. This is ridiculous. His time will come.
Arsenal’s goalkeeping situation last year was an absolute mess, but that’s okay because, in the summer, they addressed it. They brought in Bernd Leno to be the direct competitor with Petr Cech and just like that, we had options, and they were exciting.
Leno was a solid bet, who had a ton of potential that went a bit dull as his club struggled to make any advancements. Still 27-years-old, Leno had all the time in the world to make a serious go at the long-term goalkeeper position here at the Emirates.
At the start of the season, fans were pretty peeved that Cech was getting the green light ahead of Leno. Cech, who essentially failed last year, and Leno, who was only necessary because Cech had essentially failed. All makes sense right?
Only, here we are four matches into the season and Leno hasn’t even notched even a minute of playing time. Which is fine. Leno is fine with it, he’s happy to fight for his place. He even pointed out that he “isn’t crazy.”

And yet there is still doubt being talked about. Actual, real life doubt about Leno’s credentials to be at the club. I can’t even begin to think why anyone would start casting doubts on the guy at this point in the season.
The reason why Leno has not played yet may be questionable. That I’ll conceded. But if the guy himself isn’t worried about it, which he isn’t, then I have no reason not to believe him. What’s likely happening is that Cech is being given a shot at redemption, which he is struggling at taking.
There is a good chance that we see Leno soon, but even if we don’t, there is no reason to doubt anything. Leno would not be here if there were long-standing doubts regarding something as basic as his skill level. This is a quality keeper with plenty to give and anyone who says otherwise is just stirring up trouble that doesn’t need to exist.
Until we see him, what can we actually say? That he’s not good enough? That’s crap. He’s been perfectly good in recent years, albeit never reaching his initial burst. That can change with the right guidance, which he ideally now has. So just wait for it.
