Defence

6.0. Not the problem in the first half and perfectly adequate in the second. Didn’t quite get as forward as well or as loosely as he has done this season, which might actually be a good thing, but was also not exposed at the other end. It’s difficult playing full back with Mesut Ozil in front of you and Bellerin did his job dutifully.. RB. Arsenal. HECTOR BELLERIN

SHKODRAN MUSTAFI. 3.0. Just some really, really strange moments from Mustafi. He wasn’t necessarily that bad, but there were key instances where he just made some odd decisions or actions. The failed clearance when he slipped to his knee. Some odd headers and clearances also. Sokratis was forced to rescue his partner on several occasions. Very weird.. CB. Arsenal

7.5. The best defender on the day, and by some distance. I still have some concerns regarding his passing — he made a few very wayward short passes — and his eagerness to win the ball back, often leading to him abandoning his position completely. But defensively, he was very good, cleaning up the mistakes of others, winning headers and organising the back four astutely.. CB. Arsenal. SOKRATIS

6.0. Very much like Bellerin, he wasn’t the problem in the first half and wasn’t the reason the game changed in the second half. That’s not to say that he was bad, but he wasn’t exactly good either. He was just fine. Against opposition of Newcastle’s quality, that’s not a problem. Against better teams, both full backs are short of the necessary standard.. LB. Arsenal. NACHO MONREAL
