Arsenal Vs Newcastle United: 5 things we learned – Game of two halves
1. It’s time to start Torreira
I’m aware that I have already dedicated one section to the impact of Lucas Torreira after his half-time introduction. But I wanted to hammer home the importance of his individual display and what it must now mean for the collective team moving forward.
Against Cardiff City, Torreira had a similar effect as here. It was not quite as noticeable and self-evident, but there were certainly signs of his growing influence at the heart of the midfield. Those signs were substantially built upon against Newcastle, so much so that I would say he was the most important player on the pitch throughout the 90 minutes despite not starting.
Many, myself included, called for Torreira to start after his display against Cardiff. Four games into the season was more than enough to ease him into proceedings and it was time for Emery to commit to his best players. Emery obviously did not agree — Torreira did take a knock during the international break, which could have had an impact on Emery’s decision.
Now, I believe it is utterly undeniable that Torreira has to start. His influence is too great; his presence is too important for Emery to overlook. Torreira needs to be starting. It’s time.
