Midfield

I really enjoy the trio of midfield options that the Gunners have because of the diversity that they have in those positions. We have experimented with each of the six possible combinations and the pairing that is starting now, and is expected to start against Watford, looks to have the potential to be the most dynamic on a regular basis.

That pairing being Granit Xhaka and Lucas Torreira. The two offset each other really well in terms of highlighting each other’s strengths and hiding the deficiencies. They had their first start together against Everton and it wasn’t as strong as we might have liked, thanks in part to the 14th minute yellow card to Torreira that disrupted his ability to be his usual, rampaging self.

Watford will undoubtedly be trying to disrupt this midfield’s ability to control the game, which is exactly what the pairing of Xhaka and Torreira is meant to do – control the game. Xhaka with passing and possession, Torreira with winning the ball back.

I would expect the always-prepared Unai Emery to have a gameplan to emphasize this midfield duo and free them of the same frustrations they found last week.

Up next, the wide attackers.
