Arsenal: Emile Smith Rowe has a great open road ahead of him
By Josh Sippie
Arsenal are already pulling out stops for Emile Smith Rowe, and it’s easy to see why. There is a great, open road ahead of him, opening more every second.
Arsenal‘s midfield is budding brilliance for the long haul, but there still stand a number of issues that need to be addressed. And by midfield, I mean both attacking midfielders, and deep-lying midfielders, and everything in between.
There is a nice base being built with the deep midfield, but being that there are only three guys to two positions, with Mohamed Elneny floating, there is opportunity there for someone to fill a gap or two.
Then there is the attacking role, the No. 10 role, which has more of an opportunity than arguably any other position. Mesut Ozil and Aaron Ramsey both have their future up in the air, and with Jack Wilshere having exited over the summer, and Henrikh Mkhitaryan not really suited for the role, there are opportunities galore, if only someone would take it.
Which is where Emile Smith Rowe fits into this situation. Normally, when a young player makes his way up into the first team spectrum, he doesn’t find a lot of opportunity brimming, let alone sitting there, waiting for him.

Smith Rowe has that. And he has more. There really is a great big, open road ahead for Smith Rowe. The opportunity is there for him to take it, all he now has to do is actually do exactly that. He has the faith of Unai Emery, he has the opening there, and he is being handed enough game time to provide evidence that he is the way forward in the midfield questions, and no one else is needed.
Ozil and Ramsey are on shaky ground in an era where Wenger is not here to defend them. Nothing would make Unai Emery’s job easier than to appoint Smith Rowe the heir apparent to this all-important position that is getting closer and closer to a disaster, if neither Ramsey nor Ozil can latch onto the position, Ramsey because he leaves, Ozil because he can’t adapt.
Behind them, it’s up to Smith Rowe, he’s the guy who can take the role, and Emery clearly sees it too, as he is adamant that the young man is in store for even more opportunities.
This is a unique situation for Smith Rowe to be in. Hopefully he can make the most of it and solve the problem before it develops.
