Arsenal are screwing the pooch with Aaron Ramsey, yet the Welshman has been an upstanding citizen. Surely there is some hope left yet.

Arsenal have been doing the dance of death with Aaron Ramsey for months now and it’s been getting slightly out of hand. What should have been a cut and dry issue – just pay the man! – turned into a royal muff up, as the Welshman is now committed to leaving the club in the middle of a rebuilding phase that he was supposed to be a central part of.

But he isn’t giving up on the team in the midst of what could shape up to be a surprisingly successful season. In fact, he said that he is still dedicated to achieving something special this year.

And all I can think, through all of this, is that surely there is still some hope that a deal can be done. Ramsey said that he thought they were about to agree on a deal before it fell through. I can’t imagine that whatever made it all fall through can’t be overcome. It’s not like they were asking him to sacrifice his children to a lesser deity.

Ramsey isn’t someone you just replace. I can’t point out enough that the two major trophies we have won – the FA Cup over Hull City and the FA Cup over Chelsea, wouldn’t have turned out the way they did except for the heroism of Ramsey.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

Those aren’t isolated instances. These are regular occurrences for him.

The replacements linked to taking over his role don’t exactly have me swimming with confidence. I love the potential of Piotr Zielinski, and if Alex Iwobi or Emile Smith Rowe could step into his shoes seamlessly, obviously I’d be all for that, but in reality, how likely is that to happen? And Hector Herrera? Not exactly on the Ramsey level, plus he’s older than the Welshman anyway.

Not at all. Not only is it not likely to happen, but I’m willing to wager a hefty sum that none of those players can live up to what Ramsey can provide in a time that really needs someone like him to take the reigns – which he is absolutely capable of doing.

Surely there is still hope. Surely the club hasn’t just accepted this situation. If the two parties were that close once, they can get there again.
