Lucas Torreira is finding his footing more and more at Arsenal, and that leads us to the most exciting thing about the Uruguayan’s growing involvement.
Arsenal‘s evolution this season has shown some clear and obvious signs of growing into something bigger and more sustainable.
They started out with just a competent attack that carried the team. That turned into a front two-thirds, complete with a fantastic midfield duo, that could win the crucial battles and pump home the goals.
Only recently has the defense been getting in on the action too, finding their footing and stability. But throughout all the fluctuation, the biggest strength is coming in the midfield, with a partnership that brings out the best in each other.
While I normally focus on Granit Xhaka, it’s Lucas Torreira that is the cause of most of my excitement right now. We know what we are going to get out of Xhaka, he’s become reliable, with a workflow that is consistent day in and day out.

It’s Torreira who has showcased the growth that has been synonymous with the growth of the midfield as a unit, and that is what I find to be the most exciting thing about him. It isn’t the fact that he can sense a pass before it happens, or that he will go to every length imaginable to stop the forward progress of an opposing attack.
It’s the fact that he is getting better and better. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, when Torreira started the season, he looked lost and out of place. Now, more and more, he is proving to be a dominant player at the club, and someone who can be relied upon to do, not only his job, but more and more with each performance.
The interceptions are coming, but the actual ball-winning and tackling hasn’t developed as much yet, nor has the attack. Yet these are all things that he has either showcased an affinity for, or we know he can do through other experiences.
Just wait until Torreira is able to be a cohesive member of this attack, when he is able to drive the ball forward, retain possession, and make some critical passes. That’s when he will be nearing his best.
He’s such a clear-cut solution already, now what we have to look forward to is when he gets closer to is actual best. He’s the best midfielder for the job at hand, but he isn’t even at his own personal best yet.
