Arsenal: Remember when we actually wanted Fabinho?

There was a time when Arsenal fans were crying out for Fabinho, but our midfield is too good to even think about having him now.

Arsenal‘s draw against Liverpool brought out the best in the Gunners in a lot of areas. Their versatility was one thing, because while certain players significantly underperformed (Aubameyang), other players picked up the slack and not much was lost out on in the end.

But the true glory of the Gunners came in the midfield, where a Granit Xhaka/Lucas Torreira combination put the Wijnaldum/Fabinho pairing to shame. And by to shame, I mean that neither of those guys was able to get a foothold on the match, whereas from the onset, Xhaka and Torreira knew exactly what they had to do and they did it.

The timing of all this is pretty awesome. It wasn’t more than a year ago that this Arsenal midfield was the subject of serious mockery. This summer, they went all in and purchased Lucas Torreira for half the price that Liverpool splurged on Fabinho.

Fabinho, who is just as old as Granit Xhaka, was irrelevant in the draw. Arguably worse, as he became a bit of a liability with loose tackling. Wijnaldum wasn’t any better.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

All in all, the Liverpool duo lost the ball six total times, most of which was losing out to the Gunners’ midfield pairing or, worse (I mean better), to the attack.

Compare that to Torreira and Xhaka, who only lost the ball one time between the two of them.

Granted, Fabinho is still a great player, and Wijnaldum certainly has his merits as well. But all of this is simply my way of saying that this Arsenal midfield is really damn good. And not only are they really damn good, but they are young too. Torreira is 22 and Xhaka is 25.

They compliment each other so well that there is no need to even revisit the midfield set up for years to come. Not with the likes of Guendouzi waiting in the ranks.

Just goes to show, yet again, that it isn’t always money that solves things. Fabinho cost £43m+, Wijnaldum cost £25m. Both of them cost more than both of the Gunners’ guys and the Gunners’ guys were younger (and obviously still are).

Right decisions at the right price. We didn’t need Fabinho. We still don’t. Give me our current set-up and stay the hell away.
