Arsenal will likely be without Danny Welbeck for awhile, and it’s a tragedy. At this point in his footballing career, what can even be said?

As soon as Danny Welbeck went down, I started trying to put it into words. What can you say about something like this? It’s not “just another” Arsenal injury. This isn’t the first time that, right at the peak of Welbeck’s breakthrough, he goes down hurt.

I must have tried about 17 different article titles before I just threw them all out the window and asked myself – what can I even say about it?

Welbeck went down just past the half-hour mark against Sporting CP and was in clear agony as he writhed on the ground. Numerous team mates (Guendouzi especially) were shaken by it all and when Welbeck had to receive oxygen before being stretchered off, it was pretty clear that it wasn’t good.

As of writing, the extent of the injury hasn’t been given, but it was an ankle injury, and the reaction alone hints that it will not be something that an international break will wash away. We may be without Welbeck for awhile.

This isn’t the first time this has happened. When it rains for Welbeck, it pours. Look back at 2014/15. A patella problem turned into knee surgery that kept him out for 42 games and almost one calendar year.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

When he returned, he scored that crucial goal against Leicester City and we were convinced that this was the awakening of Danny Welbeck. And then he went down with another serious injury, this time cartilage damage, and was out for 29 games.

After shooting off to a quick three goals to top the league last season, Welbeck again went down with an injury, although this time he was only out for 11 total games.

Now this year, fresh off of proving himself with Unai Emery’s system, fresh off of a fantastic streak of showcasing just how useful he can be, and not to mention in the wake of the final year of his contract, and Welbeck goes down with an agonizing injury.

What can be said? And, better yet, what can be done? The contract situation was already hanging in the brink, do you potentially let this be the last we see of Welbeck in an Arsenal shirt? I certainly hope not.

I’m not in charge (thankfully), but I would be at the hospital giving Welbeck a new contract. Emotionless managing be damned, this is different.
