Arsenal phenom Matteo Guendouzi was supposedly a target of PSG this summer as well, but it’s quite clear he has conclusively made the right decision.
Arsenal did brilliantly when they snagged Matteo Guendouzi on the cheap from Lorient this summer. So brilliantly that, even had they not landed Lucas Torreira (God forbid…) it still would have been a pretty healthy bolstering in the midfield.
But it’s been made clear now, by Guendouzi himself, that the Gunners weren’t alone in their pursuits of him. His childhood club PSG were also in on the mix, but he chose North London in what was his first of many brilliant life decisions.
This midfield has improved by leaps and bounds in just one summer. As it stands, they really have all they need between Granit Xhaka, Lucas Torreira and Matteo Guendouzi. Take any one of those three out of the picture and it turns a bit flimsy, but as it stands, it’s brilliant.
For the first time against Huddersfield, we got a taste of what might be the future of the midfield, with all three suiting up together for the first time. Frankly, I found the midfield to be one of the few bright spots in an otherwise tenuous and stressful match.

That’s been the case with Guendouzi throughout the season – being one of the few bright spots in otherwise ugly matches. Consider the openers against Manchester City and Chelsea, for instance.
Guendouzi made the absolute right choice coming to the Emirates. At PSG, he may have felt at home, in a comfort zone, where he would have been hanging out on the bench, but by pushing himself to England, to the top of the pile, and to the top of the top of that pile in Arsenal, he has already driven himself to improve more than he would have at PSG.
That isn’t an indictment of how PSG does things, it’s just a matter of fact. When you stretch further outside of your comfort zone, you improve quicker, and Guendouzi has. And he will continue to do just that – improve.
Of course, I would also take the “unpopular” opinion and argue that his Hippy Crack escapades were the right choice too, despite what the media is losing their pants about. Team bonding, baby! This is all about team bonding!
Except for the flop against Huddersfield. That was the wrong decision. The absolute wrong decision. Everything else, though? Pristine.
