Arsenal: If Denis Suarez is “too expensive” then what next?
By Josh Sippie
Arsenal have no money. It’s freaky to say out loud, but go ahead and try it. If Denis Suarez is too expensive, then what the hell are we going to do?
Hi. I’m usually pretty optimistic about Arsenal. I always like to filter out the negative chatter and focus on the good things that are happening, because there are a lot of good things happening at the club even as I type this clearly foreboding message that it’s about to take a turn to negative town.
Here’s the thing – we’ve always known that the financial approach of this club is “different.” We don’t take mega-money infusions from billionaires, even if we are, in fact, owned by a billionaire. That billionaire has invested zero of his own money into the club, and it exists solely on operational revenue.
As such, there isn’t going to be a lot of optimism around any transfer rumor, which, again, is something we should all be used to at this point.
That said, there has never been so much barrenness that we can’t afford anything and that is currently what it is looking like.

The Gunners want Denis Suarez, the Barcelona outcast who has hardly played a lick of football in the past two years. By now, we should all accept that this is a realistic link, especially given Suarez’s link to Unai Emery from Sevilla.
But Barcelona don’t want to loan him to the Gunners, as is the preferred method here in North London, they instead want to sell him for a reported £20m.
Okay, no big deal, right? That is a fee that Manchester City wipe their derrières with.
Not so fast! The Gunners can’t even afford to buy Suarez because apparently they don’t even have £20m to spare.
Now, I’m sorry that I have to betray my unending optimism for a second, but there is a nice big dose of pathetic attached to a club that wants to compete for a title but can’t afford to spend £20m on a winter signing. Is there not?
Honestly, I don’t want us to look like City, flinging money at everything with a pulse. But for the love of everything, we can’t even afford Denis Suarez?
I don’t know how this all gets resolved, but apparently, with the Adidas deal kicking in this summer, there might be some funds to kick around. Maybe by then, the club can boot Ozil as well, and free up the money he’s been filching from the dry and dusty coffers.
