Arsenal: You’ve still got questions? Bernd Leno has more answers
By Josh Sippie
Arsenal were kept in the match against Manchester United thanks to some fierce goal-keeping from Bernd Len, so if you still have questions, here are your answers.
I still go back to several weeks ago, when Arsenal fans on the social sphere were asking the question of when the last time was that world class goal keeping kept this club in a match. It is kind of a tough point to make, given the state of this defense, but at the end of the day, the point was completely ridden off by Bernd Leno not long after, against Southampton and Bournemouth.
He was a mammoth shot-stopper in that one, making ridiculous saves. But in response, some fans said, “well, we’ve always know he was a good shot-stopper, that isn’t his problem.”
To which Leno went ahead and kept doing exactly what we’ve apparently always known he was good at in the next few matches, but against Manchester United, it wasn’t just the shot-stopping that saved the day, though that certainly helped.
Even that first save on Romelu Lukaku in the early minutes of the match. That couldn’t have happened if he hadn’t made the decision to go to ground early. His last-ditch lunge, a fantastic save, was made possible by perfect decision making.

Skipping over the fantastic shin save off Lukaku later on, since apparently we are no longer awed by great goal keeping, Leno probably gave everyone a near heart attack when he came bursting off his line to pluck the ball from Lukaku, who was free in space had he been able to collect the ball.
Leno was outside his own box when he took the ball away, Manuel Neuer style, and he saw the rest of the play into safety. But he could never have gotten their in time had his positioning not been absolutely perfect. Which it 100% was.
And he denied Rashford in a similar manner, by simply making the right decision after being in the right place at the exact right time.
So which part of Leno’s game were you still worried about? Decision making? He was perfect. Composure? Perfecter. Positioning? Perfectest.
If you want to keep discrediting Bernd Leno after this, then there’s just no hope for you.
When was the last time that world class keeping has kept us in a match? Try three of our last four Premier League matches. He was a mammoth against Bournemouth too, we just didn’t need him to be as much.
